Linhares, Brazil: behind the paper mill, the city is nearly a national coffee champion

Linhares is known for its pulp mill and the oil industry along the northern coast of Espírito Santo. Behind that image is an agricultural story few people talk about: the city is Brazil's 2nd-largest producer of Conilon coffee, trailing only its neighbor Rio Bananal.

Linhares is home to one of the country’s largest pulp mills, on the northern coast of Espírito Santo, with oil also present in the regional landscape. But BNDES lending tells a different story: the biggest loans go to food and beverage (R$206.3 million), not pulp and paper (R$1.69 million) or chemicals and petrochemicals (R$22.5 million). Behind that “food and beverage” category sits an agricultural story few people talk about: coffee.

The city is Brazil’s 2nd-largest producer of Conilon coffee, with R$834.8 million in production value in 2024, trailing only its neighbor Rio Bananal by R$23.7 million. That value nearly doubled in a single year (from R$503.4 million in 2023), driven mostly by the price of the bean: physical output grew just 3.6% over the same period.

Where the economy actually breathes

GDP confirms industry is real: 41.0% of value added, the city’s largest block, driven by pulp and oil that shape the landscape. Services follow close behind at 39.3%; public administration sits at 14.0%; agriculture adds up to 5.71%.

But the picture changes when you look at where development lending actually goes. BNDES loans in the city name food and beverage as the top destination, R$206.3 million, more than 9 times what went to chemicals and petrochemicals (R$22.5 million) and more than 122 times what went to pulp and paper (R$1.69 million). The mill sits in the landscape; development credit sits somewhere else.

A bean ahead of cacao and papaya combined

That “food and beverage” category has a name: coffee. Linhares is Brazil’s 2nd-largest producer of Conilon coffee, with R$834.8 million in production value in 2024. The city also ranks near the top in two other crops: 2nd nationally in papaya (R$196.5 million) and 8th nationally in cacao (R$358.4 million). Combined, papaya and cacao are worth R$554.9 million: less than coffee alone.

The jump in coffee’s value between 2023 and 2024 is mostly a price effect, not farmland expansion: harvested area and output volume grew only slightly (44,860 tonnes in 2023 to 46,460 in 2024, up 3.6%), while production value jumped 65.8%. It was the bean market that moved, not the size of the farm.

More cars than motorcycles

In the vehicle fleet, Linhares has 49,410 cars against 36,552 motorcycles, 1.35 cars for every motorcycle. The leading car model is the Volkswagen Gol (4,323 units), but the most common motorcycle, the Honda Biz (8,843), still outnumbers the Gol by nearly two to one on its own. Pickup trucks like the Fiat Strada add up to 3,620 units.

Total bank credit went from R$2.05 billion to R$2.59 billion in two years, up 26%, while real-estate financing grew much slower, from R$550.5 million to R$593.2 million, up just 8%. Real estate accounts for 23% of all credit in the city. Pix received per month, by contrast, nearly doubled: from R$1.23 billion to R$2.79 billion, up 127% over two and a half years.

Neither too young nor too old

Linhares’s family archetypes don’t pull toward either extreme. Married couples with young children are 22.01% of households, 11% above the national average; single-parent households are 7.1%, 5% above average; multigenerational families add up to 13.79%, 8% below the national average. Elderly couples and elderly people living alone combined are 4.79% of households, 30% below the national average, but without the sharp contrast seen in other cities in this series.

The profile NexOS assigns the city is Emerging, with average household-head income of R$2,659 and 13.7% of families receiving Bolsa Família welfare, well below the national average.

Where growth squeezes

The Trama profile records spatial tension on roads built for cars passing through, not for coexistence between pedestrians, motorcycles and neighbors. Bars and churches compete for sound space with nearby residents. As a regional hub, urban land near downtown, the Shopping PátioMix Linhares mall and main access roads keeps rising in value, and new buildings and gated developments push out longtime residents toward more peripheral areas with less public service and transit.

Seven stations, none running away with it

Linhares is a complete media hub (TV, radio and digital), but radio has no runaway leader: the gap between the top station and the sixth is under 2,500 monthly listens. Rádio Litoral 96.9 FM leads with 3,676 listens, closely followed by Rádio Nova Onda 104.9 FM (3,266) and Rádio Gazeta 98.3 FM (2,921).

Digital tells a different story. The leading site, euviemlinhares.net, leads by a wide margin with 694.5k monthly pageviews, more than double the runner-up, nortenoticia.com.br (269.2k). Of the 8 local sites mapped, 4 are plugged into programmatic buying (euviemlinhares.net, nortenoticia.com.br, sitedelinhares.com.br and emdiaes.com.br); the other 4, including jornalterral.com.br (13.2k pageviews), sell only through direct deals.

Signal arrives, creative capacity stays limited

Urban coverage reaches 91.9%, and rural coverage sits at 48.1%. ANATEL classifies the city as “mixed connectivity, expanding,” with creative capacity still at “low capacity” (audio, text and light images), not heavy video.

How Linhares wants to be spoken to

Whoever speaks to Linhares speaks to someone who organizes life between a busy downtown, a quieter neighborhood, and a rural belt that still sends trucks, market goods and farm produce into the city’s commerce. It’s a city of separate pockets of community, linked by radio, neighborhood WhatsApp groups, and the memory of people who arrived from elsewhere “to make a life.”

In the end, Linhares proves the industrial facade isn’t always the real engine: the pulp mill and the oil sit in the landscape and in the GDP, but development lending bets on food, and the bean behind that “food and beverage” category nearly reaches the top of the country without the city itself placing it at the center of its own story.
